Update on Lincoln Memorial Photo
We'll, we're getting a little swamped with emails regarding my op-ed piece and photograph in the New York Times this morning and my blog post from election night. But since they're some of the nicest emails I've ever had the honor of reading, swamped is probably the wrong word to use.
Here's a note from a woman named Molly, in Whidbey Island, Washington:
Dear Matt:
I'm not getting married and I don't need a portrait. I just wanted to let you know what you already know - the photo of the Lincoln Memorial on election night is a masterpiece. I have personally named it "Lincoln's Children" and it recalls for me my climb up those steps twenty or so years ago (I'm an old lady now). As I climbed, tears came spontaneously and much to my surprise. When I saw your photo this morning, there they were again - the tears.
I'm a writer, but in this case I happily acknowledge that a picture is worth a thousand words, mostly because I can't even think of the right ones to describe the feelings this picture brought. I hope somebody buys a big copy of this and hangs it where everyone in the White House, the Congress and the Supreme Court can see it every day. You've captured the essence of the New America.
All best from an old lady.
Molly
As I said, who wouldn't want to get emails like that?
Many of you are asking if there's a way to obtain a copy of the photograph, which I've quickly dubbed "Lincoln Memorial, 12:15 a.m., 11/5/08." (The photograph shows some thirty people--I was expecting 3,000!-- listening to President-elect Obama's victory speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, the site of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream Speech.") Though we haven't sold images like this in the past, I'm happy to make this picture available as a limited edition print.
We're going to print it just as we did the Holocaust photographs we hung recently in Paris for my exhibition at Le Memorial de la Shoah: as a gorgeous print on fine art exhibition paper. Each 11 x 14 print (9" x 9" square image size) will be signed and titled. The price is $175. You can opt for it color or in black and white.
To purchase a copy of this photograph, please go here.
Thanks for all the nice notes,
Matt

I was just coming here to tell you how lovely I thought your piece was in the Times. Alas, as often happens when living here on the west coast, I am late to the party! It really was fantastic, Matt, and William and I will be proud to hang another of your photos in our home.
Loved your piece in the Times! It's hard to imagine that had I tried to marry my husband just a few short decades ago, it would have been illegal and now here we are - we have elected our first black President. I was in tears after hearing that Obama had won and once again, you have found a way to really memorialize my sentiment - and I am sure that of many people around the world - with the perfect image.
Matt,
I am thinking you pissed off a few photogs at TWP this morning.
Nice thinking, nice shot. The most surprising thing is that Burnett wasn't already there with a Speed Graphic...

Thanks for being there and for making the print available. This would make a great book, with a chapter on each person and why they were there.
I first heard about your photograph in a column written by Connie Schultz in the Sunday edition of the Cleveland Plain Dealer and how it generated such a massive reaction. Naturally, I was curious and had to check it out for myself. I can see why your photo provoked an intense emotional response from many people. The best thing I liked about your photo is how it seems like Lincoln himself was presiding over such an historic moment and how he commanded silence as Obama recited his victory speech over a small radio for a small gathering of people from all walks of life. It's almost as if Lincoln came back just for that day to bear witness the fruits of his labors. Well done, sir.
How long will you make available the image for purchase? I see that the gallery will be up until March 9, 2009. I'm hoping I can buy the image next February (which is when I'll have an extra $200 I can spend on it after the holiday travels are over).
It is truly a wonderful image and captures for me both my own feelings the first time I saw the Memorial and my feelings last week after the election. I intentionally did not watch the prime time election coverage because I could not have stood it had another 2000/2004 happened. But I was a right happy fella the next day. Now the experience is, in some way, complete with your image.
I saw the photo and read your account on SportsShooter.com this morning. It is indeed a wonderful image. I've searched my mind for a better adjective, but I think "wonderful" says it -- as in "It's a Wonderful Life". It has the understated eloquence of "old-time photojournalism", when one or two sheets of film could tell the story.
